The investigation of this case was never smooth. On the night they returned to the manor, Watson decided to go by himself to seek the mysterious man he had seen the last time. He found a small cottage at the bottom of the valley under a rock. All indications showed there must be somebody residing in the place. Watson hid in the room to see what kind of person the owner of this place was on earth. After a while, some footsteps were heard getting closer and closer. A familiar voice ordered, "Come out, it's me." It was Holmes. From the footprints on the ground and the cigar buds, he knew Watson must be hiding inside. By doing so, Holmes could investigate the whole case more conveniently. He also told Watson, Mrs. Stapleton was not Mr. Stapleton's sister but his wife. For Mr. Stapleton knew it was much more advantageous for him to let his wife act as his sister. This guy must have some schemes.
